Mapping ecological systems through layered visualizations

This exercise investigated how landscapes operate as lattices of interwoven systems that interact in both collaboration and conflict. Beginning with the selection of an ecoregion and perspectival image, I analyzed the ecological dynamics at play, including vegetation patterns, wildlife movement, water and wind flows, and atmospheric conditions. The goal was to uncover how these processes function independently and together, shaping the visible and invisible structures of the landscape.

Using Rhino, Grasshopper, and Illustrator, I abstracted these systems into layered diagrams that merged raster imagery with algorithmically generated linework. This method emphasized motion, change, and interaction while maintaining a balance between representation and abstraction. The outcome revealed the intricacy of seemingly ordinary landscapes and built skills in translating complex ecological processes into clear visual frameworks for design thinking.
